Student Leadership
Why do we believe in student leadership at Baulkham Hills High School?
- Student leadership is driven by service to others which is a value highly respected in our whole school community.
- Student leaders need to promote the good things, the things that are the most worthwhile and the most true within the community and nurture a better quality of civilisation for all students.
- Students are empowered by working together to achieve a common goal, a shared purpose.
- Students have the power, or the authority to make a difference in their schools.
- Leadership is a challenge and should be for all students, not just those elected into specific positions. This is difficult, but at Baulkham Hills we provide every opportunity for students to take a leadership role.
- Adult mentors, role models, people who have the capacity to listen, to help students explore ideas, to share their experiences, to facilitate processes and to provide feedback form the backbone of a successful leadership program.
The Prefect Body

The Prefect body are a group of students elected by the Year 12 cohort and staff that play an integral role in the running of school functions and represent the school in the wider community.
The Prefects are a visible force within the school, acting as positive role models for the younger students. The Prefects aid in the coordination of the annual Presentation Night and organise the school's ANZAC day services and assemblies. Each year the Prefects raise in excess of $1000 for Parramatta Legacy through their "Prefects Slave Auction." The Prefect body works closely with the school's SRC to coordinate large fundraising efforts and school projects.
Within the wider community the Prefects are enthusiastic about their involvement with the local retirement village where they are able to aid in functions and form friendships with residents. The Prefects also have meetings with the leadership bodies in other Sydney metropolitan schools which fosters improvement in the quality of student leadership in all our schools.
2009 Captains
Student Representative Council

The SRC (Student Representative Council) is comprised of 42 students from Years 8 - 12 and from the Support unit. SRC's are a group of committed students who make essential decisions in order to benefit their fellow students, teachers and members of the school community.
School SRC Events in 2009
As the 2009 school year is well underway, Baulko SRC are turning over many new leaves by proposing many new innovative ideas, along with continuing past traditions.
Already completed: On the 13th of February, the Valentines Day Bushfire Appeal was held. Red roses were sold for $4 and singing telegrams for $6, with all profits going to the victims of the devastating Victorian Bushfires. The school contributed generously for the people in need and the proceeds were hence in excess of $2,500.
Clean Up Australia Day was held on the 27th of February, to accentuate the need to be environmentally friendly in today's society. In their Science periods; students along with their teachers actively picked up and disposed of rubbish to make the school a greener place. SRC Representatives are role models for school population and thus involve themselves in Green Group (Enlivening ideas to help the environment-planting trees, recycling etc.), Baulko Outreach (Aiding those less fortunate than ourselves), Band and the Cadet Unit.
Leukemia Foundation's World's Greatest Shave was held on 13th of March, as a school charity effort to help those suffering from cancer. Students are given the opportunity to shave or colour their hair, over $10,000 was raised last year. 11 brave students had their head shaved this year.
On Friday the 3rd of April, the first ever Easter Day was held; to commemorate the festive Easter spirit. The Easter Egg Hunt was where small, paper tokens were hidden around the school and could be exchanged for an Easter egg when discovered. The Hot Cross Buns were a big hit, with the delicious snacks almost sold immediately. The Easter Hat Competition allowed us to flaunt our creativity; some very unique hats were on display. Furthermore, The Easter colouring competition received many interesting entries. All proceeds were donated to the Westmead Millennium Foundation, significant institute of science and medical research.
Moreover, BHHS' first Trivia night was conducted on Friday 26th June. 9 teams of students and 1 team of teachers, each with 10 participants; competed head to head, using their maximum potential and knowledge in aim for the final prize. Activities included quizzes (sport, geography) and games (Scattergories, wrapping mummies in toilet paper). The code was Black 'n' White; students dressed in suits and Dalmatian themes with the school library creatively decorated. The overall winners were the "Irish Wristwatches", and all are to be truly commended on the magnificent school spirit and enthusiasm shown on the night.
Our annual Streetball (based on basketball) competition has begun. It is conducted over one term and helps boost school spirit as well as providing positive interaction between junior and senior grades and members of staff.
Collaboration with other schools: Four members of the Student Council Representatives (Fiona Li, Tara Shenoy, Thiveya Theivendan & Ewy De Guzman) attend District SRC meeting. Three members (Andrew Chen, Tara Shenoy & Thiveya Theivendan) attend Regional SRC conferences. Tara Shenoy has been selected for the WSR (Western Sydney Regional) Representative Team. They convey current ideas and events of BHHS and learn about the measures taken by other schools to enhance their charity/ fundraising efforts and their leadership skills.
The SRC extremely value and take into consideration the input and feedback given by members of the school community. If you wish to make a suggestion or inquiry, please notify the school or email directly to the SRC at: baulkoSRC@hotmail.com
Student leadership opportunities
The Student Representative Council at Baulkham Hills is an active body who coordinate a range of whole school activities ranging from charity work to participation in school governance. Five of the students also hold a place in the prefect body of the school. The two groups work closely to provide an outstanding leadership service to the school community. They model exemplary practice in all aspects of school life to the student body.
Some particular examples of leadership initiatives include
Students at Baulkham Hills presented at the BOS Respect and Responsibility Forum where they discussed some of the ways in which the SRC and prefect body provide service to the local community. They also demonstrated the work they do with students from the support unit in developing their reading and comprehension skills through a peer reading program.
The SRC also provides leadership at all whole school events including year assemblies and the weekly assembly where they coordinate and conduct these events including operation of all sound, lighting and other equipment. In order to ensure a quality presentation the students work cooperatively with each other and with staff. They are outstanding role models for the student body.
