Student achievement in 2007

 Academic

         For the academic achievements of our students, look at the Annual School Report for 2007.

 

Arts

            The school entered two teams in the Premiers Debating Challenge. The Year 11 team were zone champions and regional finalists.  The Year 7/8 team were zone and regional champions and State finalists for the second year in a row.

                        Dr Louise Wakeling was awarded a Premier's Teachers Scholarship investigating creative writing methodology.

                      Twelve students competed at the State Finals of the Shakespeare Festival and four at the National Titles.

            School Art Show was held in August showcasing HSC works and works from all years.

                        HSC works of four student were considered for Artexpress. Katrina Lim's work was exhibited at David Jones'.

                        School bands competed in the Yamaha Competition and NSW State Schools Band Festival. The Stage Band achieved a Gold Award at the Yamaha Competition and Band Festival and was judged Best Stage Band at the State Band Championships. The beginner band achieved a Gold Award at the Band Festival.

                        Mitchell Fung, Marcus Ho and Eka Cox performed in the Schools Spectacular.

Sport

            Students competed at the major carnivals (swimming, cross country, athletics) at zone, area and CHS levels. We continue to be a very competitive school in all carnivals.

                        There was high participation in Wednesday Grade Sport in the Hills Zone. Nine teams were premiers in the Term 1 and 4 competition and 10 teams in the Term 2 and 3 competition.

                        Several teams competed in the NSW CHS knockout competition. The girls Volleyball team were state champions for the fifth year in a row and went on to become Australian champions. The boys Volleyball and Touch teams all were successful in reaching the quarter finals (final 16) in the state.

                         A high number of students selected in zone, area, and CHS representative teams in a variety of sports.

                        Bobbie Liang and Chloe Groves were awarded Sydney West Sporting Blues for Volleyball.

                        Simren Kaur and Marino Reginold won Western Sydney Region recognition certificates for Athletics.

            Enoch Lam and Daniel Wu represented Western Sydeny Volleyball.

                         The support unit students won the inaugural disability cricket competition - The Blackwell Shield.

                        Stephanie Schweitzer represented Australia at the world athletics championships in Brazil. Stephanie made the finals in 400m and 200m in her class.

                        Brianna Sparre was 3rd in CHS Sailing Championship.

                        Heather Cockburn, Jayraj Singh Bhatti won bronze at CHS Athletics.

                        Knockout Boys Tennis team were Sydney West Champions.

Other

   Emily La was selected for Western Sydney Debating.

      Five students completed Distinction Courses.

      James Hedley - scholarship to visit Germany.

      Anna Colless went on exchange to USA.

     Young Achievement Australia team "Euphoriya",  Naheen Mahbub, Jessica Ji.

   Junior A Chess Team was the regional winner.

      In the Brain Bee Challenge, Dilshan Seneviratna came 1st Konrad Islam 2nd and they were 2nd in the team event.

      Mitchell McDermott's Ext. 2 English project on Performance Poetry was selected for the State Drama Company.

      Charitha Siriwardena was 2nd in Lionel Bowen Young Writers Awards.

      Western Sydney Region, Regional Directors Award for Excellence in Teaching awarded to Michelle Kennedy; Excellence in Student Achievement awarded to Simran Kaur.

        Maths Olympiad, School of Excellence was Alwin So.

        Australian Science Olympiad Scholars were Jiaqi Cai and Hari Raja.

        Year 9 Design and Technology Class won Excellence in Youth Awards from Baulkham Hills High Shire Council.

        Five students achieved perfect scores in the Rio Tinto Science Competition.

        Four students were awarded UNSW Co-op scholarships.

        Six prizes were from NSW Economics and Business Studies Competition.

        Oscar Wong won 1st Prize Crystal Growing Competition from Royal Australian Chemical Institute.

        Narainraj Kamalaraj won the Lord Florey Student Prize.

        Nine students were awarded University of Sydney Scholarships.

        Mock Trial team consistently performed well in the State titles.

        The SRC raised in excess of $10 000 for a variety of charities and raised money for the building of a school in Uganda.

        Emily La represented the school at State SRC level.

        Over 300 students are enrolled in D of E Scheme. Francis Wong and Emiyu Park achieved Gold Awards.

        Naheen Mahbub was promoted to Assistant Regimental Sgt/Major for NSW Cadet Unit.

        BHHS Competed in the Tournament of Minds creative problem solving competition.

    Support unit students raised over $1500 to help send Stephanie Schweitzer to the world athletics championships.
