Scripture

Students are expected to attend Special Religious Education (SRE) for one period each week. The SRE program caters for students of most cultural backgrounds. Students consider moral and ethical issues from a religious perspective.

In Years 7 and 8, SRE is integrated into the timetable. In Years 9, 10, 11 and 12, SRE is conducted on a Thursday afternoon.

If no provision of lessons is currently available in your stated religion, you may select an appropriate alternative or you might approach a representative of that religion regarding involvement in the school’s SRE program. This involvement should be discussed with the principal and is conditional on the religion having an approved provider.

Students not attending SRE will be supervised by the school and can work independently on homework, reading or private study depending on the availability of rooms and supervision.

SRE teachers will be provided with a class list of the names of students. At any time, you have the right to change your SRE nomination or to withdraw your child from SRE lessons. A note to the Principal will affect this change.

Responsibilities of Schools

  • There is a clear obligation on schools to facilitate SRE. It is not an option for schools.
  • SRE should form an integral part of school activities, taking place in school hours and under the jurisdiction of the school.
  • The lessons or period length for SRE should be consistent with the age and attention span of the students and the content and method of presentation.
  • As part of the process of enrolment, parents and guardians are to advised:
    • of the nature of SRE at the school;
    • that they can nominate a SRE class that they want their child to attend;
    • that they may nominate an alternative persuasion, where SRE is not offered for students of a particular group; and
    • that they may stipulate that their child is not to attend SRE classes.
